Question:
Am I breaking the law if I’m in the UK and I gamble on the internet?
Answer :
No. To quote from the Gambling Commission website :
There is nothing in current legislation which makes it illegal, or seeks to prevent, British residents gambling on the internet in their own homes
You are advised to gamble at sites that are regulated in the UK, or are regulated in one of the “white list territories” that have similar standards to the UK. You can find a list of sites that are well regulated and have won a reputation for fairness in our reputable casinossection.
If you are outside the UK things are, unfortunately, less clear. We’ll try and clarify the position in other countries in the coming weeks and months - there are many legal test cases pending and the situation will not be clear until these have been ruled upon. Many European countries (notably Italy and Spain) have recently introduced regulations for online gambling, so that players can play at licensed sites which offer concrete protection for the player. Elsewhere there remains something of a “wild west” spirit, so try and find a casino which is well established, with good player feedback. Don’t risk too much of your money until you are sure the casino is fair - use “play money” to try the games out and if at all possible find a casino with a low minimum deposit.
