Today’s update from Betfair:
World Champion records first win of the season and sends get well message to Massa after expert drive in Hungary…
Lewis Hamilton was matched at [14.0] as he recorded his first race win since October 2008 in Hungary.
Hamilton put in a flawless drive to take maximum points after taking the lead on the 11th lap. Pole-sitter Fernando Alonso dropped out of contention after he was forced to make an early pit-stop.
Prior the race, betting.Betfair columnist and Formula One commentator <a href=”http://betting.betfair.com/betting/formula-one/hungarian-grand-prix-betting-back-in-business-250709.html”>David Croft had said that Hamilton may be ready to claim a long awaited victory. And so it proved as the adjustments to the car’s aerodynamics which McLaren made after the German GP transformed it into a winning vehicle.
After the race, Hamilton sent a get well message to Felipe Massa, who was involved in a highspeed crash during Saturday qualifying which resulted in the Brazilian undergoing emergency surgery.
He said: “Maybe I can speak for all of us, but today was a sad day given what happened with Felipe. We miss him, wish him well and we all wish him a speedy recovery.”
Despite Hamilton’s delight at being back at the top of the podium, Betfairian’s don’t seem to think that this win will kick-start a successful campaign for him to retain the Drivers’ Championship.
He is at [32.0] with fellow Englishman Jenson Button, who finished in eighth position in Hungary, still favourite at [2.24]. However, this was a third consecutive race when the Brawn-Mercedes driver has failed to mount a sustained challenge and he will be concerned.
Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen finished in second place - a good result for Ferrari who went into the race with only one driver due to Massa’s absence.
Sebastian Vettel had a disastrous race, drifting to eighth position from second on the grid before retiring on the 27th lap. Vettel has been overtaken in the Drivers Championship standings by Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber, who finished third and was a backed at a low of [1.47] to win the race. The Australian can be matched at [3.6] in Betfair’s Drivers Championship market.
In the Constructors Championship, Red Bull are the favourites at [1.46] followed by Brawn-Mercedes at [3.0]
