Today’s update from Betfair:
Timeform run the rule over the field for the big race on day two of the Betfair Ascot Weekend.
A strong gallop brought out the best in Conduit at last year’s Breeders’ Cup and can do so again here. He looks to have a touch more class than stable-companion
Tartan Bearer, who will similarly be well served by the return to twelve furlongs. The filly Look Here has also produced her best efforts at this trip and is good enough to reach the frame.
Ask is unbeaten in two runs this year, and was impressive in theYorkshire Cup prior to edging out Youmzain and Look Here in the Coronation Cup for a first Group 1 success. A career-best required to land this, though.
Conduit was highly progressive in 2008, winning the St Leger and Breeders’ Cup Turf. He has had inadequate stamina tests at ten furlongs this year, but has shaped as if every bit as good, behind two top-notch 3-y-os in the Eclipse last time.
Frozen Fire was the Irish Derby winner in 2008, but has been unable to reproduce that in three runs since, looking a difficult ride. A Strong gallop here is likely to suit, but he couldn’t be backed with much confidence, even so.
Scintillo came into his own this spring, winning the Winter Derby and a Group 2 at Chantilly (very stirred up prior to disappointing latest outing). He surely lacks the class to play a leading role here, though.
Tartan Bearer was last year’s Dante winner and Derby runner-up. He put in sound efforts at ten furlongs this term, including a close second to Vision d’Etat at the Royal meeting here, and will be suited by a return to this longer trip.
Look Here was a fine winner of the Oaks in 2008 and was also third in the St Leger. She made a pleasing return when third in Coronation Cup, and found a slow pace at ten furlongs against her in Ireland since. She should give a good account.
Alwaary took a while to get his act together, but followed a listed race win with an unlucky third (promoted) in a Group 2 at Newmarket recently. There may be more to come, but this is a big ask.
Golden Sword didn’t look out of the top drawer when winning one from four as a juvenile, but made all in the Chester Vase in May and fine runs in Epsom and Irish Derby since. A handful of older rivals look stronger, though.
Rockhampton was twice a winner in the spring but is exposed in better company since. He acted as a pacemaker in the Irish Derby last month and is expected to play a similar role here.
