PokerStars was trying something new.
After holding the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure on a cruise ship in 2004, it moved the growing event to the Atlantis Resort and Casino in 2005. PokerStars also decided it wanted to hire a blogger…just for the week…to cover the event. That blogger was me.

Within minutes of my being on the assignment, somebody pulled me aside and pointed a young guy I’d never seen before.

After a bit of a lull this summer the poker world is once again moving forward at full steam. The World Series of Poker-Europe began Friday in London and of course the 2009 Aruba Poker Classic kicks off in two weeks. Once again Matt Savage and his staff will be running the show in Aruba and so we can all rest assured that the tournament will be impeccable from start to finish. Right now Matt is warming up for Aruba by helming the Commerce Hold-Em Series, a 17-day extravaganza at the Commerce Casino. Hold-Em in all it’s varieties are offered during that series, including one tournament that I think could, if taken to an extreme, be the Next Big Thing in poker.
The event I’m talking about is the Iron Man tournament, which will be held on September 23rd out in L.A. This $1,600 event has NO scheduled breaks. There’s also no dinner hour–three meals will be served during play. The clock doesn’t stop until the champion is crowned. No matter the number of entrants only the final nine get paid, and 50% of the cash goes to the winner. No deals allowed. And to sweeten the pot the Commerce is adding $10,000 to the prize pool.
