Roulette Wheel Layout
The layout of a roulette wheel varies depending on which type of roulette you are playing. The two most common roulette wheel layouts are the American roulette wheel layout and the European roulette wheel layout. In the case of American roulette, the layout of the wheel involves both a single zero (0) and a double zero (00). The single zero is at the bottom of the roulette wheel, with the double zero at the top of the wheel. On a European roulette wheel, the layout involves just one zero, at the top of the wheel. All of the other numbers on the two different types of roulette wheels are arranged in a slightly different manner, though in both cases the numbers run from 1 to 36, and alternate between red and black, beginning with red 1, followed by black 2, red 3, black 4 and so on. The zero and double zero appear in green on the roulette wheel. A double zero on a roulette wheel increases the advantage that the house has over the player, so try and find a casino which allows you to use the European roulette wheel layout if at all possible.
The croupier will spin the roulette wheel and, after announcing that the period of betting is over, will then release the ball (traditionally made of ivory) along the outer edge of the roulette wheel. Where the ball lands will be determined by metal frets around the wheel - as the ball slows it catches against these and will "land" on one of the numbers on the wheel.
