Slot machines can be great fun to play, and some of them offer the chance of a big cash prize - but they can also make a big dent in your wallet if you are not careful.  The first rule for playing slots is to only play with money you can afford to lose.   Keep an eye on your credits, and cash out any significant wins rather than letting them mount up as further credit - that way you will always know how much you are ahead or behind.  

If the site you are playing at has a VIP club or any other kind of "slots card" then make sure you sign up for it, as there are often lots of perks associated with joining that you can use to help fund your slot playing.  

Play the slot in fun mode before you play for real money so that you know exactly how it works.  Take the time to read all of the rules about each particular slot machine so that you don't overlook any features that might give you an edge.  

Check what the payout rate is - most sites have this information available, but you might have to hunt around for it.  Pick a slot that has a decent payout rate, and not just the slot that looks like it is most fun.  With a bit of effort you should be able to find a slot machine that pays out around 97-98%, rather than one that pays out 90-92%.  It might not sound like much of a difference but even in a single session you will notice how much further your money goes.  

If the slot has different payout rates for different numbers of coins, then play the maximum number of coins to give yourself the best chance of winning.  If you can't afford to play the maximum number of coins then drop down to a cheaper machine and play the maximum number of coins on that one.  

Keep an eye on the running totals for progresive jackpot slot machines, and play them when they offer the best return for your money.  You have the same chance of winning big when the total is lower, of course - but when you do strike it lucky you want the payoff to be as large as possible.  Like the payoff Jim L got when he struck it lucky at 32red casino  on their Major Millions Progressive Slot - he walked away with $1,683,524.64!  Why settle for a mere $1,683,524 - that extra 64 cents might come in handy!
